In many family law cases, paternity is an issue.Establishing paternity provides not only the identification of a father, but can also augment the financial support and long term stability of the child.

Establishing paternity may also allow a father to claim certain rights.  As a father, you have the right to:

  • Visitation

  • Legal custody (joint decision making regarding the child's education, medical, religious decisions for a child)

  • Physical custody (joint or sole custody of a child, which includes designation of primary residency.  The  court must determine what is in the best interests of the child

  • Preventing an adoption (a biological father must consent to an adoption by the child's mother and a third-party)
